Before You Troubleshoot
Confirm which model you have, since a few details genuinely differ between them:
- Open One pairs through the Tuya app.
- Pro and QClean pair through the Smart Life app.
If your app isn't finding your unit, the most common reason is simply having the wrong app installed for your model — check this first before anything else. Have your order number on hand too, in case you do need to contact support.
Power Issues
- No response after power on: check that the power socket and power adapter are functioning properly. Always use the original Petbuds adapter — third-party adapters can cause damage or safety issues.
- Power cycle: unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in. After powering on, all three units run a self-check (you'll hear a beep) — wait for this to finish before doing anything else.
- On Pro, after powering on you can press the cord into the anti-disconnection slot next to the power socket to stop it being knocked loose accidentally.
WiFi Connectivity Issues
All three models — Open One, Pro and QClean — only support 2.4GHz WiFi. None of them work on 5GHz networks or on networks with special authentication (like hotel or airport WiFi).
- Turn on Bluetooth and location permissions on your phone — both are required during pairing.
- Double-check your WiFi name and password are entered correctly.
- Move the unit closer to the router if the signal is weak, and keep it away from other appliances that can interfere with the signal.
- If automatic search fails on Pro or QClean: press and hold Auto/Connect for 2 seconds (Pro) or use the Menu button to select "Connect" (QClean) — you'll hear a long beep and the connecting light will flash quickly. Follow the app's prompts from there.
- On Open One: long-press the WiFi button for 5 seconds — you'll hear a beep and the WiFi indicator will flash slowly, ready to pair in the Tuya app.
- If it still won't connect, restart your phone and router, then try pairing again from scratch.
The Fault Light and Beep Pattern (Pro & QClean)
On Pro and QClean, a genuine fault is easy to recognise: the fault light comes on solid white, and the unit gives a long 10-second beep, pauses for 5 minutes, then repeats the 10-second beep — and keeps cycling like this until the fault is cleared.
If you see this pattern, power the unit off, check for any obvious blockage in the barrel, and power it back on. If the fault light returns after a clean restart, get in touch with support with a short video of the light and beep pattern.
Barrel and Rotation Issues (Pro & QClean)
- Product suddenly stops during rotation: turn off the power, move the unit onto flat, hard ground (not carpet), then turn it back on.
- Barrel bounces during rotation, or doesn't rotate at all: remove the barrel, reinstall it following the setup steps, and make sure it's locked in place with the barrel lock buckle. While it's out, check for anything blocking the rotation.
- Sharp friction sound during operation: check that the base roller spins freely, and check for poor contact or friction between the barrel and the base.
Auto-Clean Not Triggering
Pro and QClean: Auto needs to be switched on in two places — on the unit itself and in the app. If only one is on, automatic cleaning won't run.
Open One: the unit only auto-cleans once three conditions are met:
- It's sitting on a hard, flat surface — not carpet or a mat
- The cat weighs more than 1.2kg
- The cat has stayed inside for more than 10 seconds
If a clean isn't triggering on Open One, work through that list in order — placement is the most common culprit.
On all models: cats and kittens under the minimum weight threshold are intentionally excluded from triggering Auto or Timing Clean as a safety measure — this is expected behaviour, not a fault. (See the Open One notes below for the exact weight cutoffs, which differ slightly by model.)
Litter Spill, Leakage and Friction Noise
- Massive litter or urine leakage: check the litter pad is installed in the correct direction and fully seated into the leak-proof slot. A slightly deformed pad frame can usually be corrected by hand; if it's badly deformed, it's time for a replacement pad.
- Large amount of litter spilled during cleaning: don't fill litter past the MAX line marked on the pad, and make sure you're using a filter mesh that's compatible with your litter type.
- Litter type: Pro and QClean are suitable for tofu litter (≤3mm diameter, ≤10mm length), mixed litter, bentonite litter, and mineral litter — but not large, long, or non-clumping litter, which can cause exactly these spill and leakage issues.
Garbage Bag and Waste Bin Issues
- Waste bin lid won't close or lock: fold the garbage bag down properly so it isn't covering the lock hole, then try closing it again.
- Garbage stuck inside the lid: check the bag is fully compressed by the clamping/fixing ring, and check the bag itself isn't damaged.
- Garbage spills out of the waste bin door during cleaning: this usually means the bag needs replacing sooner — aim to replace it more frequently in warm weather (roughly every 3 days for a single-cat household is the general guide).
- Waste bin door won't close: you may be using a bag that's too thick or stiff — stick to the original Petbuds garbage bags. Also check for anything physically stuck in the door mechanism.
Open One: Things That Work a Little Differently
A few details are specific to Open One and worth knowing:
- App: Open One pairs through the Tuya app, not Smart Life.
- Weight rules: not suitable for kittens under 6 months old, and only intended for cats over 1.2kg, up to a maximum recommended weight of 15kg.
- Weight display accuracy: a margin of ±10–20% on the displayed cat weight is normal and not a fault.
- "Anti-pinch" abnormality during operation: check the litter bag is sitting smoothly with no folds, and check the infrared sensor isn't blocked by litter dust or debris.
- All three indicator lights flashing rapidly: check the waste bin and drum are both installed correctly, then reboot the power.
When to Contact Support
All Petbuds units are covered under Australian Consumer Law and a 1-year manufacturer warranty. If the steps above don't resolve things:
- Have your order number and model (Open One, Pro, or QClean) ready
- A short video or photo of the issue — especially of any light/beep pattern — speeds up diagnosis considerably
- Reach out via our contact page, or check our warranty terms first if you'd like to understand what's covered
FAQs
Why won't my Petbuds litter box connect to WiFi?
All Petbuds models only support 2.4GHz WiFi — 5GHz and authenticated networks (like hotel WiFi) won't work. Also check Bluetooth and location permissions are turned on, and that you've got the right app: Tuya for Open One, Smart Life for Pro and QClean.
What does the fault light mean on my Pro or QClean?
A genuine fault shows as a solid white light with a repeating pattern: a 10-second beep, a 5-minute pause, then another 10-second beep. If you see this, power-cycle the unit and check for blockages; contact support if it persists.
Why isn't my litter box auto-cleaning?
On Pro and QClean, Auto mode needs to be switched on both on the unit and in the app. On Open One, the cat needs to weigh over 1.2kg and stay inside for more than 10 seconds, on a hard flat surface.
Is it normal for the displayed cat weight to be a bit off?
Yes, on Open One a margin of ±10–20% is considered normal and isn't a sign of a fault.
Why does my litter box keep leaking litter or urine?
This is almost always a litter pad installation issue — check it's seated fully into the leak-proof slot, and check it isn't deformed. Also make sure you're not overfilling past the MAX line.
